<image:title>Work - The Game Awards 2016</image:title>
<image:caption>Electronic Countermeasures was brought in to design scenic video looks for The Game Awards 2016 that reference the construct of the map that is present in all games. We decided to interrogate the edges of the map specifically the visual and gameplay glitches and noise that often manifest when a player has gone too close or has reached the edge of the game. ECM developed a series of noise and glitch animated architectural forms “glitchitecture” to ultimately be used as scenic video looks for The Game Awards 2016. The show included 3 high resolution LED screens, 2 with an irregular tile configuration, 1 flying LED center screen, a cave of rear projected transparent triangular prisms aka “The Voxel Cave”, and video mapped pixel tape. ECM created 4 sets of show looks for all surfaces employing a number of techniques including noise and pattern generation in Processing, Notch for real time depth of field, lighting, and animation, Cinema 4D for modeling and video texturing, and finishing glitch and texturing passes in After Effects.</image:caption>

<image:title>Work</image:title>
<image:caption>01111, is a aural and visual performance that articulates the 32 possible states for communication within the Shannon-Weaver model of communication. The piece was conceived and composed by Andreas Levisiano with Electronic Countermeasures providing production, lighting, and video design for the show. 01111, assigns each performer and system component a function within the 5 part Shannon-Weaver communication model that includes a sender, encoder, channel, decoder, and receiver. The Sender speaks prepared text that is passed onto the Encoder for digital signal processing that informs the vocal performance of 5 vocalist that serve as the Channels. The vocal performance of the Channels is parsed by the Decoder and is translated into light that affects the Receiver that displays video to the audience. The composition steps through each possibility of signal chain completion, loss and noise state, starting with only the Sender component operating (10000) and ending with only the Receiver (00001). Electronic Countermeasures designed an autonomous lighting and video system that takes in the individual Channel (vocalist) input and score state conditions to create a minimal and transparent visual design that forefronts the conceptual underpinnings of the composition.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Electronic Countermeasures, created a series of LED deltoids driven by animated video, to back the unique microtonal pop sound of the 11ins. The design consisted of two aluminum triangles covered with individually addressable RGB LEDs and a large floor based LED triangle. Electronic Countermeasures used animation to quickly build intricate animated lighting effects that matched the complexities of the 11ins microtonal compositions. These animations were then fed into Electronic Countermeasures new openFrameworks LED mapper, that converts video or Syphon feeds into ArtNet to control each LED pixel on the strips of the triangular forms.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Electronic Countermeasures created the creepy, mysterious, and hazy atmosphere to envelop the Oyster Kids for their showcase at The Echo on June 27th, 2016. The design for Oyster Kids by Electronic Countermeasures included a purposefully broken random inner section of spot/washes encased within a rectilinear structure of washes and beams creating angles and irregular light structures pointed outward over the crowd while silhouetting the pseudo anonymous Oyster Kids masterminds. Electronic Countermeasures handled production and lighting design and shared lighting programming duties with Lauren Sego.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Electronic Countermeasures was tapped to bring their unique creative perspective and process to build the spectacular show graphics for the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 in Stockholm, Sweden. The core onsite content team that created 85-90% of all show content consisted of 4 content creators from 3 companies, Bright (Finland), Electronic Countermeasures (USA), and Greenwall (Sweden). Electronic Countermeasures’ had to bring out the full arsenal of tricks including generative and procedural driven looks built in Processing and openFrameworks and their render resource management skills to fill the 72,000,002 pixels spread across the massive 900 square meters worth of LED that the Eurovision stage was built from along with the 12x HD feeds worth of aerial, hologauze, and rear projection surfaces and 90 pixel mapped Ayrton MagicDot-Rs. The build process was completed over the course of a 60 day tech and rehearsal period split between SVT and the Globen Arena. The resulting 2 semi-finals and finale were a stunning success and were broadcasted to a record breaking 204 million people worldwide.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Exo/Endo is a large-scale work for voice-controlled electronics, singers, cello, electric bass and prepared turntables in collaboration with two visual artists, aka Electronic Countermeasures. Exo/Endo was written by Andrea Young for specific performers: Andrea Young, Michael Day, Braden Diotte, Derek Stein, Sara Sinclair, Sharon Kim and visual artists Kerstin Hovland and Emery Martin. Exo/Endo was first presented on May 11, 2014 at the Sharon Disney Lund Theater, Valencia, California. The visuals were front projected upon 20ft sheets of screen material suspended from 6 metal frames that created pods for each performer. The visuals melded animation, live action, and programming (Processing) elements into a 40 minute show that undulates between sparse and quiet moments to aggressive brooding onslaught in tandem with the musical compositions.</image:caption>

The visual experience of the show revolves around a set of semi-transparent walls and discs, designed by LeRoy Bennett and Tobias Rylander of Seven Design Works and fabricated by Atomic Design. Electronic Countermeasures, created the animated visuals by melding analog in-camera practical effects with digital compositing and procedural phenomenon. Designing these visuals for simultaneous front and rear projection created levels of depth and parallax movement that shifts with perspective of the viewer. The resulting design wraps Joy Williams and her band within an ephemeral light and videoscape that ebbs and flows with her music.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Electronic Countermeasures, has been providing content management and auxiliary screens animation/conforming services for the joint Mobius Productions and VER video screens control team for the two day iHeart Radio Music Festival in Las Vegas starting in 2014. The festival typically has a 20+ artist act that always boasts the biggest EDM, Pop, Rock, R&B, and Hip Hop acts on the scene. Backing each artist is a unique combination of LED screens driven by Green Hippo Media Servers playing back content provided by the Artist or generated onsite. The iHeart Radio Music Festival is also unique in that it is not only a massive music festival, but it's also a live broadcast event.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Electronic Countermeasures, created animation for Bruno Mars’ Moonshine Jungle Tour (4th leg) in conjunction with Commonwealth Projects, LLC. A combination of After Effects and Processing were used to create John Whitney-esque animation melded with 1980’s analog video aesthetics for the show opening song, Moonshine. Animation for “Natalie” and the show closer “Gorilla” were also handled by Electronic Countermeasures, in conjunction with additional on-site animators, Meejin Hong and Julian Petschek. Emery C. Martin, served as Lead Animator and Content Manager for the on-site tech portion of the process.</image:caption>

<image:title>Work - alt-J: Relaxer Worldwide Tour 2017-2018</image:title>
<image:caption>Electronic Countermeasures was brought in by Fragment Nine to create animation for the unconventional screens and lighting configuration for the current alt-J: Relaxer 2017-2018 World Tour. The screen configuration consisted of a 8 semi-transparent LED screens on carts and 150 pixel-mapped Sceptron linear LED fixtures staggered and layered in space. We created a series of highly textural noise, geometric, and light-based looks tailored to the dynamic 3-dimensional and archirectural nature of the show. We got to work with the opening, closing, and highest energy songs of their amazing set including: 3WW, Intro (Awesome), Something Good, Nara, In Cold Blood, Every Other Freckle, The Gospel of John Hurt, Hit Me Like That Snare, Fitzpleasure, Intro (This is All Yours), and many more. We also brought in our frequent collaborator Meejin Hong to contribute to 3WW. The show has gone on to garner the coveted Knights of Illumination award and continues to travel the world thrilling audiences.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Electronic Countermeasures was commissioned to create abstract screen art for LACMA’s ART + FILM 2017 Gala. This year was especially fun, challenging, and fulfilling. We had to find creative intersections between the work of the evening's honorees; Mark Bradford and George Lucas along with Gucci’s current line “The Alchemist's Garden.” We opted to create a lush, dense and intriguing environment with of the evenings looks by using hand-created under the camera and practical effects playing with light, shadow, depth, and materiality. We worked with paper, plants, ice, projection, light, and liquids. We were also honored to work directly with Annie Lennox to create the screen looks for her solo performance to close out an enchanting evening.</image:caption>

<image:title>Work - Shards</image:title>
<image:caption>Shards is an installation that allows people to draw directly onto projection mapped faceted objects using mediums we all know and love: crayons and makers. Participants are given paper with a template representing the UV map of the 2 geometric objects present in the room and are let loose to draw anything. They then place their drawing under the camera and it is automatically mapped onto the shapes and projected live. This also combined with a number of animations created by Electronic Countermeasures that interacted with the drawings on a 20 minute loop along with a live synth driven soundscape.</image:caption>

<image:title>Work - UNSEAL UNSEAM</image:title>
<image:caption>Unseal Unseam is an experimental, multimedia opera that re-frames the fable of Bluebeard’s Castle from the perspective of his abused wife, Judith. This unique opera combines traditional operatic singing with extended vocal techniques accompanied by modular synth, electronic piano, and textures of harsh electronic noise made through amplified props onstage. Electronic Countermeasures' Kerstin Hovland joined with the all female creative team lead by Shannon Knox (director), Micaela Tobin (composer/performer), and Sharon Chohi Kim (composer/performer) to design the subtle and strong lighting and projections that guide the audience through this amazing and powerful immersive opera. Frequent Electronic Countermeasures collaborator Lauren Sego provided lighting programming and Electronic Countermeasures' Emery C. Martin provided additional lighting programming.</image:caption>

<image:title>Work - The 1975</image:title>
<image:caption>Electronic Countermeasures worked with Seven Design Works to create the vibrant minimalist video world encompassing The 1975 for their 2015-2016 tour. The show utilizes over 20 individual LED video surfaces that were used to create an immersive world of light and video with single point and multi-point perspective visual constructions informed by James Turrell and Olafur Eliasson. Electronic Countermeasures, created the animated visuals using conventional 2D/3D digital tools, live action footage, procedurally generated patterns and structures, along with a heavy reliance on their deep knowledge of abstraction and minimalist art. This unique stage was designed by LeRoy Bennett and Tobias Rylander of Seven Design Works with LED and lighting being supplied by VER. One of the key goals for creating the video for this stage was that it needed to look great and photograph equally well from all angles both on axis and off axis. In order to achieve this Electronic Countermeasures utilized d3 Designer to evaluate their looks in 3D space prior to the onsite tech in the UK. The resulting show is a visual feast that sets the stage for The 1975’s eclectic blend of pop rock for a Tumblr generation. The tour went on to garner the coveted Knights of Illumination Award and sell out both The Forum in Los Angeles and Madison Square Gardens in NYC.</image:caption>
