01111

01111, is a aural and visual performance that articulates the 32 possible states for communication within the Shannon-Weaver model of communication. The piece was conceived and composed by Andreas Levisiano with Electronic Countermeasures providing production, lighting, and video design for the show. 01111, assigns each performer and system component a function within the 5 part Shannon-Weaver communication model that includes a sender, encoder, channel, decoder, and receiver. The Sender speaks prepared text that is passed onto the Encoder for digital signal processing that informs the vocal performance of 5 vocalist that serve as the Channels. The vocal performance of the Channels is parsed by the Decoder and is translated into light that affects the Receiver that displays video to the audience. The composition steps through each possibility of signal chain completion, loss and noise state, starting with only the Sender component operating (10000) and ending with only the Receiver (00001). Electronic Countermeasures designed an autonomous lighting and video system that takes in the individual Channel (vocalist) input and score state conditions to create a minimal and transparent visual design that forefronts the conceptual underpinnings of the composition. The piece was first presented on April 22, 2015 at the Roy O. Disney Concert Hall, in Valencia, California.
